Ok...more like a 9+ mile long hike in Chesler Park...but I took liberties for titling the blog. I forgot to take my Garmin with me, so I don't have the official distance, but it is my estimate based on the maps. My wife was out on a back country overnight patrol and I didn't/couldn't/isn't really allowed to go with her. So, she spent the night out and I met up with her the next day.
I haven't run since last Saturday and I've done some strength training, but not much else. It was a very hard hike to start out with and I was really feeling it...it is very frustrating to lose conditioning so fast...or feel like I have anyway. Perhaps I'm not alone...perhaps this just happens to 40 somethings in their bids for fitness. Who knows.
Anyway, went to a new area of Canyonlands, for me...Chesler Park...it is a high desert plateau area previously used for cattle ranching. It takes a lot of up/down across several neighboring canyons to get there, but once you hike through the pass, it opens up into an expansive area. Very nice really, after you catch your breath though.
There is a section called "The Joint Trail" which I found out later how it got its name. It is a corridor between two huge rock formations...and are literallly walking within the "joint" of those two formations...it is very eerie and not for claustrophobics. There were some tight spots that had my daypack scraping along the sides. I think it would make a perfect movie scene...a nice horror chase sequence sort of thing. My wife took the pic...that is me about 40 feet away...the walls extend up around 50+ feet...very cool!
I met up with my wife who was enroute from the opposite direction. She had a full pack on and scraped a bit too. She is a trooper, I tell you.
We hung out the rest of the day meeting up with park visitors and giving them directions, guidance, etc. We also inspected the various back country campsites along the route and even issued a warning to one party that had their tent setup outside of the campsite boundary markers.
We did have an interesting nature find. My wife noticed a Midget Faded Rattlesnake that was sunning itself next to a cliff wall and within 3 feet of one of that party's tents! The snake saw us and retreated to a shady crack under the rock. We left to give it some space and I returned with my camera. It had come back out to sun a bit...it rattled at me! It was so cute...as far as rattlesnakes can be...you know..."midget" and all.
We were excited because we've seen a gajillion lizards and knew that this particular variety of snake was common in the area, but this was the first sighting! Yay for us.
Here are some more pics in the slideshow...hope you enjoy!
Can I come with you next time Kyle?
ReplyDeleteOMG wow!!! how lucky are you to have this place as your backyard....thats serious scenery!! As for rattling snake types -- not sure about that - cant even bare the reptile house at the zoo - and they are behind glass there -- I am a big girls blouse when it comes to scaley things - ick!
ReplyDeleteI think the 'loss of condition' is more likely to be your best thinking, what you focus on multiplies - you think 'lack of condition' thats what you end up feeling. But being no expert on the knees bend arm stretch bit, I could easily be persuaded otherwise.

SO cool! you are so lucky to live so close to that kind of beauty!!!
ReplyDeleteThat "Trail Joint" would freak me out! I can't stand close quarters like that where it looks like the walls are closing in on you!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful, gorgeous pictures as usual. And that snake has some great camouflage going on. Looks almost like a stick.
Nine-mile hike and you say something about losing conditioning. Um, nine-miles! Sounds pretty good to me, especially when it looks like it's uphill and very difficult. I'd say you're in pretty good shape for a man in his 40's, or that matter 30's or 20's. :)
That looks amazing! I'd love to visit.
ReplyDeleteWhat a COOL place to be!! It's an adventure every day!
ReplyDeleteWow that really is a tight spot to walk through!
ReplyDeleteYou are getting to take some amazing hikes and see some interesting things. A snake rattling at you?
Thanks for the ketchup idea. I looked online and they do have sugar free recipes.
That is beautiful! I have never been to the canyons before.... and would love to go some time! Keep up the good work. I know my dad has some trouble when he takes time off from running, but he is in his late 40s. He keeps getting the same injuries over and over again in his calf and back. Keep those photos coming!
ReplyDeleteI haven't been in canyon country in a couple of decades. Certainly these photos get a person to wondering when a return trip is on order. Mixing exercise with cool stuff like this hike, now who wouldn't enjoy that exercise session? Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeletenice man! I am not a fan of snakes. You can keep them there and don't bring that back to MO.
ReplyDeleteI can handle them...but let's just keep them in their natural habitat, okay?! :)
Great pics! My family and I may be headed down there in a few weeks. I'll look for you. Maybe we can be some of the visitors you give guidance, too!
ReplyDeleteI am freaking out just looking at a picture of that snake, you guys are brave!
ReplyDeleteI have a picture of a snake around my neck on my "proud momentS" tab on my blog, that was the first and last time I will be doing that! My son said "oh common mom don't be such a chicken"..I immediately turned pitch red and thought I may die :-).
As usual what a beautiful place to hike in. Great work!
I HAVE SEEN THAT JOINT TRAIL BEFORE! Because it was some kid who stood at the front of it and held his hand up so the crack looked like a massive light saber. Yeah, so I'm nerdy. It was awesome!
ReplyDeleteYour hike sounds like a lot of fun. I should look into some hiking places around here. I'm sure there are plenty but I haven't taken advantage of them yet.
The snake looks like he's having a good time getting his tan on.
Very cool pictures. Love the Joint Trail and the snake. It is kind of cute!
ReplyDeleteOK, you are truly an outdoorsman when you call a rattler "cute"!
