I'll see your 5K, and raise you 5K more...

Well...I have been a bit of a slug all things considered.  Yes, I had a great run on 4/24 of 6.22 miles...Yes, I did some light strength training on a couple of other days and Yes, we did do a bunch of rock climbing just this past Monday, but other than that, I've been pretty couch oriented.

This is not good...this is not really doing my best.   I have to be honest about that.  The weather hasn't been ideal due to very high winds, but that is limited excuse when there is indoor strength training options and a Wii Fit that has been collecting some dust.  Just resting on my laurels...not a good thing because it goes against the advice I hand out to others...to do your best every day.  I think I've fallen short and been simply lazy when things weren't going my way.

Anyway, I did something about it today.  It was a pretty nice sunny day, though still a stiff breeze.  I had been reading some blogs and seeing some great inspiration from people really busting their sitting places.

I've got my inlaws coming to town this weekend which conflicts with a virtual 5K that I committed to run to support Lynsey at 54 Good Reasons who is running a 5K on Saturday.  And Syl at Live. Smile. Run. (who I have a blogcrush on) asked for our support which I gave willingly.  So...I got off ma'bum and got out on the road.  Given the gap between the last time I ran, I was feeling the hurt pretty quickly...but I ignored it.

I just kept writing this blog entry in my head...revising it as I went...all the while wanting to post a victorious entry keeping my commitment, though a couple days early.  I settled in after the first 2 miles and kept it on going.  I was thinking that the 5K would have been sufficient, but also thought I was feeling good enough to do better than my last run.  Around the 5th mile, things were getting tough and the bargaining began...I pushed through it all and even passed up my 6.22 miles for a total of 6.51 miles.  It was at a much slower pace than the last run, but I'm just happy that I kept going.

So...for you Lynsey...and for you Syl...and mostly for ME...I ran the 5K and another 5K+ just to make up for not being able to join you on Saturday.  You'll do great, I'm sure...doesn't it feel good to get better and better?

    I mean, you're ok - for a guy! :D
Is it hot in here, or is it just you?

You said that once to someone, in a comment.
I wish I had thought of that!

  3. Wow! I could not do that...but I want to. How do you make yourself run so far with no one alongside to distract/cheer/commiserate with? I am so impressed! (And slightly jealous of Syl ;) )

  7. Kyle, got me thinking... resting on ones laurels has to be a weapon of the dark side. I've been on dozens of weight loss missions and lost from 10 to dozens of pounds. And each time at some point I have got to a point where I have acknowledged I can do this, I can lose weight whenever i want. And bam, I feel comfortable with that and stop trying for a day, or two. Hey, that's ok right, I can lose weight whenever I want, I know I can. And the three, ten, a hundred days pass while I walk in a daze of misguided comfort. Yeah, resting on my laurels is not a friendly behavior in my book.

Awesome you've pushed through this period of 'not really doing my best' as you've labeled it. 5k+ definitely qualifies for moving past that I would say.

    Well done!

  12. Man, with all this blogcrushing around, a girl can get jealous!

You've realized that this is all a decision to succeed and I know that you've decided to succeed- sometimes you just like to test the resolve of your own decisions.

    ;)

  14. Can I get a HELL YEAH! I like how you re-raised with a 5K. Us runners, we even play poker like runners!

That's awesome :) I'm super proud of you for getting out there, pushing through the pain, and just doing it. It was a great run. You proved to yourself that you kick ass and high five. So you had a few couch days. But you've still got it. And you had the mental discipline to run that far. THAT is what makes this week a win :)

  16. Great job on the runs Kyle, I spend way more time on the couch then you do... I need to get up and move more.... the weather is turning cold, windy and rainy, it interfers with my bike rides.....

  17. Hey man, thanks so much for all the St. Louis info, I really appreciate it and we will put it to use! And please do recommend your favorite food spots as well, healthy or not. A favorite St. Louis BBQ spot would be cool.

  18. Could you run a 5k for me while you're at it?
What? Why're you giving me that look? I thought delegation was the key to success ;)

  19. This post made me realize something shocking about myself. I am lazy...I would rather sit and read blogs than hit the treadmill for half an hour. Need to think about that. Maybe I should make deals with myself, no computer time until after workout time.
