Your best is always good enough...

Dear Diary,

Despite having a very difficult day of work and still feeling the effects of a sore throat and swollen glads, I let the blue skies, sunny day, and the energy from reading just a few blogs detailing their individual fitness triumphs push me off the couch and into my running shoes. What? yes, diary, that was one entire sentence...fudge off about my writing style!

Perhaps I really wasn't ready to get out there and should have given my body a bit more time to heal, but I did it anyway.  I fell short of my performance expectations, but I got out there anyway.  This time, I couldn't run the same distances as before.  My longest running segment was for only 14.5 minutes, but after I walked for a bit, I tried again until I was forced to walk yet again.  Sure, I would like to have posted a victory blog about my longest run yet, but I'm equally comfortable if not more gratified that I overcame my urge to sit on the couch and do what I could do.  Actually, in looking at that 14.5 minute run, my pace was 10:36 over 1.4 miles which is almost a minute faster than some of my past runs...not too shabby really.  The total was 4.89 miles for the walk/run.

Now, I have backpacking to look forward to on Friday/Saturday.  Unless I get a ride for a small piece of trail serviced by 4WD road, I'll have at least 11 miles of hiking through sand to reach my destination and meet up with my wife who will be on her third day of a back country patrol.  We'll eat, sleep, and hike back out the next day.  I'll have potentially 22 miles of difficult hiking to cover in 2 days all while carrying a full pack.  I guess I better get my rest...what?  shut up diary, I can do this...I can do anything.

Weren't you listening to me, diary?  I'm committed to doing my best knowing that it will always be good enough.  I may not always look good or feel good, but darn it, I'm always going to do my best...you remember that...after all it is all we can ask of ourselves and be able to sleep each night in peace.

Damn, I need a less judgmental diary! Now, I'm going to get going so I can feel better so I can get better and better and...

  1. Your diary is kind of a bitch...don't let her be the boss of you!

I'm impressed that you got up and went for a run even though you aren't feeling great - now that's an athlete! The upcoming hike sounds very challenging but you are more than capable - plus you get to meet up with the park ranger...how fun is that?!?

  2. I agree with Shelley - you got up and went out anyway - that's real dedication.
Sounds like a very intense weekend coming up - and it sounds like a lot of fun.

  5. It's commendable that you tried to work-out even though you weren't feeling well. It demonstrates that you are comitted to your plan.

Thanks for picking me for the "creative writer" blogger award that talks about bold faced lies...I'll do this one...really I will. LOL!

I should have known the truth had to do with the biking story as much as you enjoy biking.

I was getting caught up on you and wow you are really getting in the hiking in mountain country. It's great that you and your wife can share this kind of life together.

  6. Way to get off the couch and find your nonsick groove again. And your diary? She's kind of a whore. I'd get a new one.

  8. And here I am thinking I've accomplished something when I go 5 miles on the elliptical! 22 miles is quite the challenge. Good luck Kyle and enjoy the weekend. (Maybe you can take that diary with you and leave it for dead!)

  9. Good for you kyle, working out while feeling under the weather is always challenging. I'm pretty sure you walking during your run, had nothing to do with endurance but with the fact that you are under the weather. The body has a funny way of telling us to slow down.

I would suggest resting if your not feeling well, you will just come back that much stronger.
Keep up the great work Kyle!

  10. Hope you get to feeling better but I love the determination. 15 minutes in a run while sick - good job. Giving your best is all that is required.

have fun on the hiking trip.

  11. Thanks for the compliment. You are too sweet *BIG SMILE* I wish I had more pictures of me when I was heaviest to compare but (like everyone) I avoided cameras as much as I could.

  12. You went- that is all that matters. It's so easy to slack off. One day turns into two, two into three and so on.

Thanks for all the support- reading you inspires me not to lack off.

  17. Wish I had a diary that I could 'prove wrong' and 'talk' to. he he!

Can't wait to see your hiking picts this weekend. Weather here has been so junk that don't think I'll have some decent picts up for several weeks.

Anyway keep GBAB (getting better and better)!
