Well, I was hoping to attract you to a relatively boring subject in comparison to the rest of the fitness blogosphere. I want you to consider cabbage in your next grocery trip if you aren't already a big fan. Most people see cabbage in one of two main ways. They either see them as a very unhealthy coleslaw either immersed in oil and vinegar or swimming in a sweet creamy dressing or they see cabbage as a foul-smelling mush of greens.
I look at cabbage; however, differently.
First, it seems to stay fresh for weeks...certainly at least twice as long as the average head of lettuce if not more. I'm sure there is some great info on the interweb thingy, but I'm feeling a bit lazy today. I've thrown away too much lettuce in my lifetime. I don't really see lettuce in many non-salad applications so you either eat it up quick or it can go bad fast.
Second, when raw, there isn't the foul smell that can come (doesn't have to, though) from incorrect cooking preparation. Cabbage makes a great lettuce substitute for any of your typical salads, but also can pull double-duty as a cooked green.
Third and probably most importantly, it is much more nutritious than lettuce. While it is agreed that there are even better greener greens out there like spinach, kale, chard, etc., when stacked up against the typical red, green, or gasp, iceberg lettuce, it is superior. Not absolutely towering over lettuce, but still better.
I guess the only possible drawback might be the GI affects that some experience, but that can be passable...ha! passable...get it...I made a joke...I crack myself up...
I digress..anyway if it's been awhile since you've given cabbage a try...give it another shot.
Just added it to my list! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI'll have to give it a try. I'm not a coleslaw fan, so I don't know if I really ever had it!
ReplyDeleteUsing cabbage in my pizza recipe this weekend, in fact :D.
ReplyDeleteI made some wonderful mock eggrolls with cabbage this week. I'll post it on my blog tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteI threw a whole head in the pot the last time I made vegetable soup and it really made a big difference... in a good way.
